This event is part of the Australian Meteorological and Oceanography Society (AMOS) annual conference being held in Hobart at the Grand Chancellor from 17th-20th February 2026. AMOS is an independent society representing the weather, climate, and ocean sciences in Australia. AMOS fosters collaboration between researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to advance understanding and application of weather, climate and ocean sciences for societal benefit.

Panel discussion exploring the role of climate scientists in climate risk assessments, with examples of collaboration, benefits, and challenges

Insights from government and industry on initiating, scoping and outcomes of climate risk assessments. Hear real stories about what worked, what didn’t, and why.

Expect honest insights into the challenges (technical, organisational, communication) and practical tips for balancing short-term hazards with long-term climate risks.

12:45-14:30 Untangling uncertainty for climate risk assessment

Interactive workshop to learn about the different types of physical weather and climate data available for climate risk assessments and disclosures, the datasets strengths and weaknesses for varying applications and the role uncertainty plays in the risk assessment outcomes.

15:00-16:45 Plausible climate storylines as a tool for considering compounding and cascading risk. 

Learn what plausible climate storylines are, the benefits they provide for considering compounding and cascading climate risk, and how they have been applied in climate risk assessments.
